The evolution of Dental Implants.

Thanks to the studies about titanium biocompatibility, carried out during the 1950’s in Sweden, the first dental implant was possible in 1965.

During these first steps, the technique demanded a meticulous surgical protocol and a significant post-operative time period. The main objective of the dental implant was to serve as an anchor for a complete prosthesis. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that the first dental implants inserted into natural teeth were performed.

 

The first clinical references about following guided bone regeneration as support for dental implants dates to the year 1989. They continued the studies about the height of the maxillary sinus and the displacement of the dental nerve, both of which served to get over anatomical obstacles.

 

And finally, in recent years the use of growth factors from autologous platelet extracts allow, among other things, to activate in the placement of dental implants the healing time and bone integration.

The placement of an artificial root, made of titanium, that is used to replace a natural root that has been removed, is what we call a dental implant. This method of anchoring in the bone is used with abutments and allows, depending on the patient, the placement of a fixed prosthesis, whether it is a crown or a bridge, or to make possible the perfect maintenance of a removable complete prosthesis.

 

The preferred material for these implants in our dental clinic is titanium, because it has demonstrated its biocompatibility and it has the particular ability to protect itself with a fine layer of titanium oxide; once it has produced this fine layer of isolating material, the metal is protected and isolated.

 

As well as this quality, titanium presents a unique capacity to acclimate perfectly with mechanical deterioration. There exist diverse types of dental implants, the vary in form, in whether they are threaded, in the location of the threading, in the shape of their necks, in the condition of their surface, which can be smooth or rough, etc.
